Bordeaux is a name synonymous with prestigious and prolific production in the world of fine wine. Located in southwestern France, the lush wine-producing regions on the left and right bank of the Gironde Estuary encompass famous appellations such as the powerful Médoc, the elegant Saint-Émilion, the incomparable Pomerol and the great sweet wines of Sauternes.
These appellations and many more are part of a complex wine classification system dating back to the Napoleonic era, but viticulture was actually introduced to Bordeaux by the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago, making it one of the oldest and most storied ongoing wine regions in the world. Ancient Roman ruins and architectural marvels are still prominent in the beautiful city centre.
